What is the purpose of the objective statement on a CV?

The CV Objective: what is it for and how to write it?
Recommended for junior candidates, the objective aims to encourage a potential employer to keep reading your CV. It is a short introductory paragraph of around three lines, placed at the top of the document, to clearly state the position or field you are targeting and what you can bring to the company. It guides the reader from the very first seconds and adds a personal touch. It should include 2 to 3 strengths relevant to the position or field you are targeting: skills and qualities that will help you succeed in the role. In some cases, it can also be useful to mention your availability date.
A quick checklist:
- Is it concise? (3 to 4 lines maximum — less is often more.)
- Is it authentic and true to your profile?
- Does it avoid vague statements and generalities?
- Is it free from buzzwords and exaggerations? (Be careful with AI-generated content!)
To sum up, a well-written objective:
- Acts as an introduction and grabs the recruiter's attention.
- Summarises your value proposition — in other words: why you rather than another candidate?
- Helps your application stand out and increases your chances of being invited to an interview.
